Hinchingbrooke School

Week B Beginning Monday 26th February

Please enter an introduction for your news story here.

After the trials of last week, well done to everyone who make it into school and stayed focused.

Teachers in the English department brightened up Thursday by dressing up for World Book Day, with a range of Literary characters such as Peter Pan, the Mad Hatter, Wally, Batman and Professor Trelawney.

This week, the snow has thankfully gone and the site team is busy clearing away all the grit.  Time to look forward, to enjoy the warmer weather and the daffodils.

Notable events this week are:

Glastonbrooke Unplugged, Tuesday 6th March.

Always popular and a lovely way to showcase students’ music styles (and talent for those who choose to  perform – some even write their own songs).

Parents/Careers and students will be able to buy tickets on the door, priced at £5.  Entry to the event will be via the Gatehouse just off the sixth form car park. Please follow the signs to the event which will take place inside Hinchingbrooke House in the Old Dining Room from 7pm

Wednesday Y12 Careers Day - we have a number of visitors coming in to answer questions and talk to year 12 about their options..

All week - Trial exams – year 11

This week, Year 11 students are taking a second set of trial exams in English, Maths and Science to see how much they have improved since the November exams.  It’s really good to see so many students walking into exams looking confident and keen to show how much they’ve improved.  And, of course, their responses give us all additional information about where each student has the skills they need and where we all need to focus our attention over the next couple of months to ensure that every student fulfils their potential.

Golden Antler Winners

Every week, the tutor groups with the highest number of 5s (for great attitudes to learning) are awarded a Golden Antler trophy.  Following the award of the trophy, the tutor arranges for a celebratory photograph to be taken.  It is then displayed around school.

Last week, the Lower School Golden Antler winner was …

… 7P1 – Yet again, Mr Turnbull’s form show why they are top of the league with a unique and seasonal photograph to celebrate:

And the winner of the Middle School Golden Antlers is …

– 9P2 –And this week we have a photograph – well done Mrs Burns and Miss Crawford:

Well done to both tutor groups – and to Pepys - for dominating the Golden Antler tables!

Dates for your diary

Academic Review Day March 16th

Students will demonstrate their understanding of their progress, targets and actions.  Taking ownership of their learning is the first step to academic success, so please come along to support your child.

This week is student review, when students speak to their teachers about their strengths and areas for development.  Teachers will give students EBI’s (Even Better if) which students then use to shape what they want their targets to look like.

March 19th Year 10 exams begin:

Saturday March 24th - Careers with animals day – Godmanchester

11 April - Macbeth by the Royal Shakespeare Company.  In local cinemas – a break from books and a great way to revise for years 10 and 11 during the Easter holidays - the Royal Shakespeare Company is broadcasting a live performance of ‘the Scottish play’.  Starring Christopher Eccleston and Niamh Cussack, this is a fantastic revision opportunity for KS4 students who will be sitting their Literature GCSE exam shortly afterwards.

Book now to be certain of a ticket.

12th and 13th April - RPE Easter Revision

2 hours revision on Paper 1 in the morning and 2 hours revision on Paper 2 in the afternoon. Year 10 students can choose to attend one, or both sessions. If interested, year 10 students can collect a letter from Miss Newman or their RPE teacher and return to their form tutor no later than this Friday 9th March.

June

We’re tremendously proud that Robert Burton, who left us last year to take up a place at the highly prestigious Royal Academy of Music, has reached the finals of the Young Musician of the Year.  Robert is a saxophonist, but his talents don’t end there.  According to Mrs Cooke, Music teacher, “Robert is the most amazing student I’ve ever taught”.  He was awarded Grade 8 Distinction for the saxophone, the clarinet, the piano and the recorder – an outstanding achievement!  Another Hinchingbrooke student, Zoe Perkins, was in the final two years ago (the competition takes place every two years). The fact that both incredibly talented musicians stayed at Hinchingbrooke to study is testament to our amazing Music department.  We look forward to seeing Robert play at the finals in June.
