Revision

With exams on the horizon, it's always good to ensure your child's revision is working.  Revision has 4 distinct parts to it:

1.  Learn It - This is where the students need to be actively learning content.  Great ways to achieve this include watching pods from GCSEPod and making a revision resource at the same time, such as an index/flash cards or a spider diagram.  The key is that this should be active, not passive!

2.  Test It - Students should have a 5-minute break from what they have been learning, then come back and either complete a GCSEPod Check and Challenge or on a blank sheet of paper write everything they can remember about what they have just tried to learn.  Then check against the notes they made earlier and fill in the gaps.  The key here is that if they can remember very little, something isn't working, and they need to consider their environment, the time of day, or the method they are using.  Something needs to change!  If learning hasn't happened, then they will need to go back to Step 1 having changed what is stopping their learning being effective.

3.  Use It - Once some content has been learnt, then they will need to practice using it as they would in an exam.  This is where they then need to plan or answer exam-style questions.  Using mark schemes can help to see if they are on the right lines.

4.  Revisit It - To keep the information live, students will need to revisit it often.  There are lots of ideas below to help with this, including the Leitner System, chunking and interleaving.

Here are some techniques they could use, and some leaflets about how you as a parent/carer can help.
