LEARNING AND TEACHING POLICY

Purposes of the Policy

  • To enable students to become more able learners
  • To guide learning and teaching
  • To reinforce professional standards and exemplify best practice
  • To establish consistent expectations at department meetings and elsewhere
  • To link Learning & Teaching with other whole school documents and plans, Performance Management and staff reviews

Our Mission

It is our ambition that all Hinchingbrooke students achieve, at each stage, the highest possible step on their learning journey. They will have self-confidence, founded in their learning achievements and social skills, to become good citizens. Their physical and spiritual well being will give them energy and enthusiasm for the challenges before them. We expect that they will have pride in their success and find their school life a lasting inspiration. For our students, we seek to be the best.

We are committed to developing the quality of teaching and learning as our central task. As teachers, we will raise achievement and aspiration among all students by:

  • Offering full access to an exciting, challenging and relevant curriculum
  • Challenging and supporting all students to enable them to reach their full potential
  • Structuring and planning all lessons to facilitate independence

THE POLICY

Learning and teaching are the core purposes of a school.

The real aim of learning and teaching is to instill a sense of challenge, enjoyment and passion for learning that will equip young people to become life-long learners.  When people reflect on "My Best Teacher" in the TES they do not refer to staff who merely met minimum standards. They talk about people who had a passion for their subject, who could make it interesting and lively and, very importantly, built a positive professional relationship with their students. That must be our aspiration.

At Hinchingbrooke, we expect teachers and, where applicable, other members of staff, to:

  • Greet students at the door to ensure a prompt and purposeful start. This includes checking uniform.
  • Plan lessons based on appropriate learning objectives and outcomes.
  • Structure lessons to promote engagement, pace and challenge.
  • Share learning objectives and outcomes with students in a way they understand and that benefits their learning
  • Plan questioning so that it is sequential and facilitates the achievement of the learning objectives.
  • Ensure that a plenary (or plenaries) is planned for and delivered. The plenary must link with the learning objectives.
  • Differentiate and structure learning activities to ensure that all students can engage with the activities and be successful.
  • Ensure that all learning styles are catered for in a sequence of lessons.
  • Treat all students equally regardless of issues such as colour, race, religion or gender.
  • Follow all school policies, eg marking, assessment and homework.
  • Deal with inappropriate behaviour according to the school's behaviour management policy.
  • Communicate constructively and regularly with parents.  Keep them informed about their son/daughter’s progress, inform them of concerns and, most importantly, do not forget to communicate the good things!
  • End lessons so that students leave in an orderly manner when the bell has sounded.

At Hinchingbrooke, we expect students to;

  • Arrive promptly at their lessons, wearing the correct uniform and with the necessary books and equipment.
  • Get out the necessary books and equipment at the start of the lesson.
  • Adopt a positive attitude to the learning opportunities on offer.
  • Complete all set tasks, including homeworks to the very best of their ability.
  • Respect their learning environment.
