How can I help my child revise?  Listed below are some question and answers from a recent HSA meeting with parents on the subject.

How long should my child be revising for?

My answer to this was 20-30mins slots with 5-10 min breaks in between

Do they revise from exercise books/ revision guides?

I would encourage them to look at both.  Revision guides will have all information so this may be the better one to use if your child has not made sufficient notes/ missed any lessons.  Online websites are very good also

How soon should they start revising?

ASAP! NOW!

How can I help my child to plan for revision?

Help your child to be fully aware of what they must revise.  Find out with them.  This means being aware of which they are expected to revise for each subject.  Are they taking Foundation or Higher paper? Can get this info from school/ teachers/ revision guides. I gave examples of revision timetables, explained that parents need to be aware of which exams are coming up, which topics will be covered and if their child is not sure - contact school.

How can I check my child is revising/ has revised enough?

(Support your child by telling them you can help with their revision - don't say that you will "check on them" they will feel as though you don't trust them.  Ask them questions on a topic they have revised (or claimed to revise).  Use their revision notes (they should have made some) to make up questions.)

How can I motivate my child?

( Tick off tasks that are complete to motivate them. It can be extremely isolating  & “boring” to revise. Give your child lots of praise and encouragement.  Using incentives and rewards are a good idea – choose something your child enjoys doing/ eating/ watching/ option to “revise” with friends as a treat. ...Encourage them to think of their success in the future.)

How can I help them to find a balance in revising for all the subjects?

(This is where planning a revision timetable is extremely valuable.  You can do this with your child to help them make sure they are covering each subject.  It is also useful when your child revises for 20/30mins on one topic that they have a break and then revise for another topic so that they are not bored with the same topic.  This will help to motivate them also.)
