Hinchingbrooke School

Bikeability Level 3

Hinchingbrooke School Key Stage 3 team and Hunts SSP have been working in partnership to create a new opportunity for year 8 students.

  • Year 8 students who have a Bikeability Level 2 award were invited to participate in a Level 3 cycling proficiency Bikeability award. Bikeability is a government-recognised and funded cycle training scheme and is delivered by professional National Standard Instructors to the highest standards.

  • 16 students spent a dry and very enjoyable morning with instructors working in small groups of a ratio of 1 instructor to 3 students. The cyclists significantly increased their confidence in how to cycle on multi - lane roads and use complex junctions. They learnt new skills e.g. how to perceive and deal with hazards, understand driver blind spots and advanced road positioning.

  • Instructors commented on how well the cyclists progressed during their training and were impressed with their hard work and application. All 16 cyclists met the criteria for the Level 3 award and have been awarded with a certificate and badge to celebrate their achievements.

Student’s comments

  • “I enjoyed the challenge of learning skills to use in traffic on main roads”

  • “It was good working with smaller groups – we could ask questions when we needed help and we had lots of goes to improve”

  • “The instructors were really friendly and helpful”

It was great to see the students so positive.
