Hinchingbrooke School

Week A – Beginning 14th March 2016

Congratulations to Zoe Perkins (Y13) who, last week, travelled to Cardiff to take part in the BBCs ‘Young Musician of the Year’ – brass category.

Whilst she did not secure a place in the final, it is an amazing achievement to get through to the televised round.  Those who went along to support her report that she played with real maturity and flair doing both herself and Hinchingbrooke proud.  The episode will be aired on Friday 29th April at 7.30pm on BBC3.  Thank you to the Music department and all who supported Zoe, I am sure she will be a name to look out for in music circles in the future.

Also last week a range of students from various year groups took part in Study Skills Workshops.  97% of students said they found the workshops useful and leant lots to help them in their lessons.  Comments on their evaluations included:

“Really good, I have learnt a lot and these workshops have made a great improvement when it comes to revising”.

“I learnt how to focus, revise and remember information”.

“I will succeed in my GCSEs”.

Another 80 students will take part in an Advanced Study Skills Workshop on the Training Day (11th April), meaning a majority of students will have benefitted from these externally run sessions.

This week is packed full too.  Year 10 start their internal examinations this week, with the real experience of sitting them in the Sports Hall.  Year 11 have their GCSEs starting with languages speaking examinations and the speaking and listening examinations for the English iGCSE.  Let’s hope all the study skills and revision pays off in the coming weeks.

This week also sees the IndepenDance Show.  I have no doubt there is a great deal of talent out there and this is the chance to showcase this.  Rehersals take place on Monday and Tuesday with curtain up on Wednesday and Thursday.  There are more than an amazing 120 students from all year groups taking part in this brilliant dance show.  Talking of talent, there are also the interviews for Head Boy and Head Girl this Tuesday.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our Year 12 students to really sell themselves and what they can offer the school in terms of their leadership and vision.  Good luck to those who have managed to get through to the interviewing stage.  On Thursday our best wishes go to the students involved in the ICAEW BASE Regional Heat.  This is a business and accounting competition for students aged 16-19.  It offers a unique and exciting experience which allows students to engage in a business challenge that enables them to develop key employability skills.  Our students have already tasted success, winning through to this round.

The theme this week is all about keeping our school environment as we would want it – in this case graffiti free.  It encourages students to take responsibility by reporting graffiti when they see it so it can be cleaned.

Parents’ Forum…just a reminder that this will take place on Wednesday 23rd March in the Assembly Room, Hinchingbrooke House on the topic of homework.  There will be a presentation on Doddle (our homework platform) as well as an opportunity to have your say on the current Hinchingbrooke planner.  If you intend to join us, please email jm@hinchbk.cambs.sch.uk so we can ensure we have enough biscuits!

Have a great week everyone
