Hinchingbrooke School

Week B Beginning 9th November 2015

A great week last week despite the rain and wind.  Lots of students were involved in the start of various literacy interventions, and this continues apace this week.

Years 10 and 11 will continue with their 2 hour literacy sessions, which started off brilliantly last week.  The students worked really hard, and there was a definite feel in the room of students who wanted to do their best and get the most out of these sessions.  The study skills intervention for a different set of Year 10 and 11 students also starts this week, and a number of Year 7 students will also be involved in intervention which is literacy related.  These are all with the aim of enabling every student to fulfil their potential here at Hinchingbrooke School.

Both the Sixth Form Open Evening and the IAG day were well received last week, and the former saw the attendance of record numbers.  Hopefully the students in Year 11 are really starting to get a clear idea of their options for next academic year, and it certainly seems to be spurring them on in and outside lessons.

The year group are fully focused, especially those who sat their first IGCSE last week and are looking forward to their English Paper 2 on Thursday.  It’s not long now until their Trial Exam (mocks 30th November - 11th December) where they will get the opportunity to sit a number of papers in their various subjects to really show us what they can do.  By taking these series of exams seriously we are able to really identify the areas which need further development before the summer exam season.

The Geographers are out and about again this week – in Huntingdon this time with the year 13 students.  Also learning outside the classroom will be a group of Year 11 Drama students, who are off to a London production and the Year 12 and 13 Politics students.  Let’s hope it is a little drier for them than of late.  As for the PE Department, click on the link below to see what type of week they’ve had:

On Tuesday it is the Year 13 Consultation Evening, which all parents are welcome to attend.  This is a great opportunity to see if your sons/daughters are on track to get the all important grades which will open so many doors for them next summer.  Also thisweek we have the GCSE Celebration Evening (PAC on Thursday 12th November).  This is a fantastic evening which enables the Class of 2015 to get together and catch up with each others news, in addition to celebrating the success of both the year group as a whole and some special individuals.

Of course this week sees Remembrance Day.  In addition to a special service on Wednesday, all year groups will have an assembly looking at why we remember, with a particular focus on the wearing of the poppy.

This week’s theme also relates to this, showing all how important it is to remember those who fought for our freedom.

Extract from “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, not the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We shall remember them.”
