Rhythms and Blues (or R ‘n’ B) was a term first used in the 1940’s to describe upbeat popular music performed by African American artists that combined Jazz and Blues.
By the end of the 1970’s R ‘n’ B was being used as a general term to describe soul and Funk as well.
R ‘n’ B today defines a style of African–American music, combining elements of soul music, funk music, pop music, and hip hop.
R ‘n’ B is distinguished by drum machine rhythms, smooth vocal styles and hip hop beats.
During the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the influence of pop music on R ‘n’ B could be heard, most notably in the work of Jennifer Lopez and Justin Timberlake.
Usher and Beyonce are both the most successful artists in the present day of R ‘n’ B.
