Indie Music

‘Indie’ often refers to an artist or band that is not part of the mainstream culture and making music outside its influence. They are not connected with a major recording label, for example, Warner, Universal, Sony BMG or EMI
Typically, indie artists place a premium on maintaining complete control of their music and careers, often relying on touring, word of mouth, and airplay on radio stations for promotion.
More recently, the term ‘indie’ has become so incredibly broad that hundreds of genres can fall under its category. During the 1990’s three of the most successful artists in the UK indie charts were NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. All three were signed to Zomba, which was technically an independent label at the time.
At the moment, the word ‘Indie’ is used for the new wave of bands such as Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. It is really used to describe music with an alternative sound.
