 Year 10 COURSEWORK

As part of the 'History Around Us' unit for the SHP history GCSE, year 10 pupils will do a comparative study of Wimpole Hall and Hinchingbrooke House. This is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the historical resources we have right on our doorstep. Now a sixth form centre and conference venue, Hinchingbrooke House was once an important stately home, housing both the Cromwell and Montagu families. It is for this reason that we have decided to launch a new coursework project this year, comparing both the architectural styles of these two magnificent buildings along with exploring the declining power of the ruling classes in the 19th and 20th centuries.

QUESTIONS

Question 1

Which is more useful for telling us about changing architectural styles up to the end of the 19th century; Wimpole Hall or Hinchingbrooke House?

Use both sites and other sources to explain your answer. (10 marks)

Question 2

Using the sources and your own knowledge, how useful are Hinchingbrooke House and Wimpole Hall in demonstrating the power and position of the ruling classes in the 19th and 20th centuries?  (15 marks)

As part of their preparation for this coursework, all students visit Wimpole Hall in Cambridge for the day and take several trips over to Hinchingbrooke House. On these visits, students are trying to spot specific architectural features and learn more about social and religious attitudes. Below are some of the photos from these visits.
