A-Level: The European Course

 

The European History A-Level Course covers the history of four European states in the 19th and 20th centuries. Important ideas and ideology such as liberalism, nationalism and communism are dealt with throughout the units studied.

Unit 1 - Germany (1848 - 1890) & Spain (1931 - 1975)

Germany became a nation state in 1871, and students begin Year 12 by studying the causes of German unification, and how the German state developed once it had been created.

Between 1931 Spain went from being a monarchy to a Republic, through a brutal Civil War, a dictatorship and finally, in 1975, to the constitutional monarchy that it is today. In this unit students study these twists and turns of what has become one of the most symbolic struggles of the twentieth century.

Unit 2 - Britain (1830 - 1884)

Britain's system of government underwent significant changes between 1830 and 1884, seeing the extension of the franchise and the response of parliament to demands for radical reform. This source-based paper follows these development.

Unit 3 - Germany (1900 - 1945)

Students continue in their study of Germany, looking at how the monarchy under Kaiser Wilhelm II developed, and led Germany into the First World War. Students follow the course of the Weimar Republic following Germany's defeat, and the causes of the rise of the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler, who became Chancellor in 1933. After looknig at how the Nazi state was created and maintained, students finally study the fortunes of Germany in the Second World War.

Unit 4 - Russia (1855 - 1964)

This unit comprises a piece of coursework. Students study the later years of Tsarist Russia, looking at the changes under Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II. They explore the events of the Russian Revolutions, before examining how Lenin and Stalin constructed the Soviet state, and how it emerged under Khrushchev in the post-war era.
