Key Stage Three The content and methodology followed by our department naturally reflects the demands of the National Curriculum. Groupings In Year 7 and 8 students are taught in tutor groups. In year 9, students are taught in broad band abilty groups. Assessment Within each scheme of work there are approximately two to three formally assessed assignments. These measure students attainment within En1,En2 and En3 These assessments are completed over a number of lessons. The assignments may be marked individually or they may be awarded one overall mark. These, combined with the common assessments in Year 9 , form the basis for a student's level of attainment at key stage 3. Common Assessments In addition to the scheme of work assessments, all students in Year 9 take the Hinchingbrooke Assessment Test in English during the Spring term. Every student at the end of Key Stage Three will have a writing and reading test. The format of these assessments provide a early preparation for the first controlled assessment in GCSE English and GCSE English Language. Spellings The teaching of spellings and, indeed, grammar is an integral part of our schemes of work as determined by the National Literacy Strategy. Spellings are taught within our literacy starters as well as being identified and addressed through normal marking procedures. The government intervention strategy is also used to support less able spellers at KS3 GCSE Media Studies in Year 9 In addtion to their English studies, students at the top of the bands in year 9 complete the AQA GCSE Media Studies qualification. This provides them with opportunities for enrichment as well as a clear focus for the year. This course also thoroughly prepares students for the first unit studied in GSCE English Language.
