Hinchingbrooke School

Week A - Beginning 14th November 2016

VItal information on the Academic Review days, the up and coming Year 11 Trial Exams and anti-bullying week

Another great seven days in the life of Hinchingbrooke School last week.  The Remembrance Assemblies with members of the services (Wyton) was particularly poignant and the student’s behaviour was exemplary.  Likewise, those 34 students who represented the school at the local community remembrance service on Friday acted with dignity and poise as they laid our wreath.  The assemblies continue on Monday with Year 12 having an opportunity to reflect and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and still are today.

This week sees the launch of the Academic Review Day process.  All students in Years 7-11, and Year 13 will be given a copy of their latest progress report during form sessions.  The reports do NOT come home at this stage.  Instead the students will complete a review sheet to enable them to reflect on their report.  They will then gather information so they can start to form targets for their subjects.  This will include looking in their exercise books at the comments from teachers, and speaking to their teachers.  They will then, with the help of their form tutor, create provisional targets which will be the basis of the conversation at the Academic Review day interview.  The reports will be issued at the interview to parents.   This whole process is designed to ensure that students engage with their own learning and take responsibility for the improvements which need to take place.  Of course we will also be celebrating the areas in which they are meeting and exceeding expectations.  On Thursday of this week the ‘study at home’ tasks will be launched.  These are 4 hours’ worth of tasks the students pick to complete at home.  All of this information and more can be found at:

Students will be given all of the necessary information about this process through their form time this week. In addition to special assemblies taken by Mr Grey, Assistant Principal.

There are a number of opportunities outside the classroom this week too.  The Science Department are off on a Physics trip to Cambridge for Years 12 and 13, then again on Thursday to Leicester with Year 12.  The Year 11 Trial Exams start this week too, with the practical subjects.  Students studying one of the various Art courses will have 10 hours to complete their trial exam.  It’s not long till the written exams start either, starting as they do on Thursday 24th November.  As part of this the Y11 will have an opportunity to complete another ISA CAU (Science coursework) on 9th December.  The attendance for the last one (21st October) was fantastic.  35% of the Core Science students achieved an A* or A grade on that day for their piece of work and 70% achieved an A*-C grade.  This time the piece of work, worth 25% will be for the Additional course and the Physics Triple course.  More fantastic results would ensure that students have capital in the bank for their summer exams.

Between 14th and 25th November, we have invited our primary colleagues to visit the school for a couple of lessons to shadow Year 7 students who previously attended their primary school.  This initiative enables our colleagues to see how their students have settled in and how they are thriving in the Hinchingbrooke community.

It’s also worth noting that this Friday (18th) is Children in Need.  All week sixth formers will be collecting £1 from all students at form times, who wish to be in non-school uniform.  It’s a fantastic cause, so please help us to support it.

This week’s theme is all about anti-bullying.  The assemblies will not only cover the ARD process but also anti-bullying week.  We will be reminding students what constitutes bullying and about how to use the power we all have as individuals for the good, rather than to hurt others, be that physically or emotionally.

On that note…have a great week.
