Why choose this subject?

• If you are interested in how people live and work together then this is the subject for you.

• It leads into the A2 but is also interesting and challenging as an AS

• Sociology links well with:- Psychology; Politics;Media Studies; Economics; Business Studies and Health and Social Care.

• This subject is excellent preparation for a degree in the Social Sciences as well as care work, teaching, business, personel work etc.

Courses offered and entry requirements:

We offer sociology at AS and A2. The specifications can be seen on the wbsite for AQA (www.aqa.org.uk)

We like you to have 5 GCSEs at grade C and above with a B in English, preferable.

Brief outline of the course:

AS:

Unit 1  One question from either Families and Households; Health; OR Mass Media. 1hour 15min.exam

Unit 2  One question from either Education; Wealth,Poverty and Welfare OR Work and Leisure.  1hour 15min.exam

Unit 3  Research Methods.

A2:

Unit 4  Two questions on Religion. 1hour 30min.exam

Unit 5  Coursework

Unit 6  One, three part synoptic question on Crime and Deviance    1hour 30min.exam

Work load:

You will have 5, 50 minute lessons a week and two teachers.

You will be set 4 homeworks a half term and these will be from past papers and marked at A evel standard giving you feedback on how to improve and an indication of how well you are doing. You will be given homeworks 2/3 weeks before they are due in.

You will be expected to carry out research in you PSs and to read relevant literature at home.

You will have an end of unit test ( which will be a past exam paper) at the end of each unit.

You will be given the opportunity to attend a Sociology Conference in London
