Why choose Philosophy?

A good general AS Level that provides an opportunity to investigate some interesting issues from a different angle, and get to grips with some of life’s “big questions”.

Expect plenty of debate and discussion. The ability to think independently and critically is valuable in Philosophy. There are plenty of links with other subjects, and Philosophy students use many “transferable skills”

Courses offered & minimum entry requirements:

AQA AS 5171 Philosophy

Entrey Requirements 5 A*-C Grades, with preferably a C or above in English.

Brief Outline of the course:

Three main areas of study: theory of knowledge; philosophy of religion and a detailed study of one philosophical text, usually Plato’s “Republic”

A more detailed outline of the course is available from Paul Chester in the Lower School RE Base.

Work load:

No coursework in the AS Level element. If the course goes on into the full A Level coursework will then be required.

The main workload challenge is to keep up to date with reading and maintain detailed notes from the lessons.

Three 1 hour examination papers.
