Why choose Spanish? • You want to travel/study/work abroad • You enjoy the subject and have been successful in it • You are a good communicator • You are interested in the history, culture and lifestyle of fellow Europeans • You want a qualification which is recognised and valued by universities and employers (language graduates are among the most employable) • You would like to combine your language skills with other subjects (www.ucas.com will show you the wide range of degree courses which include a language) • You are aware that employment possibilities extend beyond education, translation and tourism – in 2000 over 50% of language graduates gained employment in business services, manufacturing or finance Courses available and minimum entry requirements: • AS - B grade at GCSE and teacher approval • A2 - pass at AS Students are entered for the OCR examination (www.ocr.org.uk for more detailed information) Brief outline of the course: AS Topics - Media, Advertising, the Arts, Food and Drink, Sport and Leisure, Travel, Transport and Holidays, Human Interest News items, World of Work • AS assessment – Oral exam – Presentation + discussion. • Extended role-play (business /travel context) 30% • Listening, Reading and Writing exam • (includes work related tasks) 40% • Reading and Writing exam 30% A2 Topics – Modern Spain, society and social issues (immigration, leisure time activities, education, youth culture, drugs, alcohol ), the environment, technology, history (the Spanish Civil War, Franco, the monarchy, the emergence of democracy, conflict in Spain), politics and contemporary news stories. • A2 assessment - Oral exam– discussion of text and topical issues30% • Written Coursework 30% • Final exam – listening, reading and writing 40% • For the AS oral exam and the A2 coursework and oral exam students are able to research any subjects of their own choosing which relate to Spain or a Spanish speaking country. Work Load • You have 9 timetabled Spanish lessons a fortnight. In addition you may benefit from weekly conversation sessions with a Foreign Language Assistant (AS – 20 minutes, A2 – 30 minutes). • The key to Language learning is frequent practice, so you can expect regular, short assignments. At AS one piece of work (written, preparation, research or learning) is usually set each lesson. • At A2 regular essays are set as preparation for the written coursework. • Additional information: • It is very difficult to study a language properly without going abroad and every encouragement is given to students wishing to establish contacts in Spain for trips and/or exchanges. Tasks in this section are set within the context of the World of Work, but the situations will be of a general nature and no specialised knowledge is required.
