Why choose AS /A2 Law?

Anyone who wants to find out how the legal system works; who has an enquiring mind and who wants to know about the environment around them.

Enjoy studying a subject that affects your own everyday life.

Students who want to make the most of their skills and take on a challenge.

With a qualification in Law, you could go on to Higher Education to study Law or Business Studies, or you could work in the legal profession, management or local government.

Students who want to do something different yet want to do a subject that complements most other subjects. It fits in well with Business Studies, Economics, Politics, Psychology, Sociology the Humanities, Languages, English, Sports Studies, Maths and Sciences.

Courses offered & minimum entry requirements:

Law is offered at both AS and A2 level

Entry requirements are 5 GCSEs at grade C and above – preferably a grade C in English. [This is not essential but desirable]

We follow the OCR Law course Syllabus No: 3839 / 7839

Brief Outline of the course:

This qualification involves the study of the legal system in England and Wales.

You will learn about the following:-

 

•  The different courts in the UK

•  The part played by both Barristers and Solicitors

•  Legal aid and financing the legal system

•  The role and powers of the Police

•  Punishment and rehabilitation into society

•  How Laws are made

•  How our law fits in with European and international law

•  You will see how the law develops and changes over time.

If you going to take the A2 award, there is an opportunity to study one branch of the law in depth.

This in-depth study can be taken in Criminal Law, the Law of Contract, or the Law of Torts.

Work load

The work is quite varied and you will be expected to do the following:-

1)   General outside reading, watching the news and reading a paper [Not just the sports section!] with a legal section.

2)   Homeworks per term will include a variety of tasks such as data response, problem solving and some extended answer work.

3)   You will be taking a significant amount of notes and be expected to contribute to classroom discussion based on the above work.

4)   3 exams are all taken in June of the AS year – All 1 hour long with a mixture of Data - response and extended answer work.

In your A2 year you do 3 further units. They are all 1h 30 minutes long.

The first 2 units are essay based and the final unit in the A2 year is based on a pre-issued theme and requires you to use legal methods and reasoning to draw together and make connections between the area of law that you are studying [e.g. Criminal law ] and legal structures and/or legal processes and/or legal issues.
