THE PROFESSIONAL TUTOR
Each tutor will have responsibility for a group of year 12 and year 13 students. These students, where possible, will be studying at least one subject from the tutor’s teaching area. This tutor will be the first point of contact for any concerns.
The tutor will be responsible for helping students to consolidate information given to them by their subject teachers into specific targets. This will be done through regular meetings between tutor and student. Tutors will also compile student references.
Although at Post-16, guidance is primarily student centred, where there are continued concerns the tutor will involve parents.
In Year 12 the initial focus will be on induction whilst in Year 13 it will be on future careers and intentions post-18.
Monitoring attendance:
School policy is that students will be formally registered in all lessons. Tutors monitor this information and any unexplained absences will be followed up.
Guidance and assessment:
Guidance in the Sixth form is largely student centred, based on one-to-one interviews with subject teachers and tutors at designated times in the year.
Guidance is structured around target setting, facilitating students to achieve their full potential.
All students entering year 12 will take the ALIS test, which will provide students and staff with an indication of potential AS and A2 achievement based on students of similar ability.
Students will be given predicted grades for AS and A2 at designated times in the year.
Specific year 12 guidance:
In February of year 12 all students will be involved in a career conference in school. There will be the opportunity to learn about all pathways post-18 and to speak to representatives from these areas. Following this conference, tutors will hold small group interviews with students to begin the process of moving on.
In May there will be the opportunity for parents to attend a meeting to introduce the University application process and, following this, students will register with UCAS Apply in preparation for applications to be made in the first term of year 13. There will also be the chance for students to attend a UCAS convention in the Cambridgeshire area.
Specific year 13 guidance:
At the beginning of year 13 students will have one to one interviews with tutors to complete their personal statement and all students should then be completing their application forms.
Tutors will compile references after receiving subject specific information from subject teachers.
Please see attached table which outlines the whole guidance process in the Sixth Form.
Dress code:
Tutors will monitor student appearance and reserve the right to send students home if they are not office smart or are inappropriately dressed.
