Why choose AS /A2 Economics? It is suitable for any one who takes an interest in the environment around them and wants to know more about what is happening in the outside world and how it affects them. It is important that you have an interest in economic affairs and a desire to explore why and how the study of economics contributes to an understanding of the modern world. Enjoy studying a subject that affects your own everyday life. Students who want to do something different yet want to do a subject that complements most other subjects. It fits in well with Business Studies, Law, Politics, Psychology, Sociology the Humanities, Languages, English, Sports Studies, Maths and Sciences. It is a subject that uses a wide range of skills and is therefore looked at very favourably in Universities and Businesses. Students who want to make the most of their skills and take on a challenge. Every one passed Economics at A2 last year. It is seen as a key AS/A2 level at all Universities. Economics students are the second highest earners in the country. Courses offered & minimum entry requirements: Economics is offered at both AS and A2 level Entry requirements are 5 GCSEs at grade C and above – preferably a grade C in both English and Maths [This is not essential but desirable] We follow the EDEXCEL Economics course Syllabus No : 8121 / 9121 Brief Outline of the course: Economics is split into 2 main sections which are inter -linked:- Micro - Economics – This is the study of the individual or firm. It looks at issues such as why we demand things, why firms want to get power, whether to put prices up or down in order to make more profit, what are the consequences of making changes such as developing a new product, taxation and interest rates. Macro – Economics – this is the study of the economy or country as a whole. It looks at issues such as the advantages and disadvantages of trading with other countries, the future of the Third World, the impact of the European Union and should we join the Euro? It looks at major areas such as Unemployment, Inflation, Interest Rates, the Supply of Money and Economic Growth. For more details go to the school intranet in Shared resources →Subject specific resources → Business Studies →Economics folder and look on the Edexcel website www.edexcel.org.uk Work load The work is quite varied and you will be expected to do the following:- 1) General outside reading, watching the news and reading a paper [Not just the sports section!] 2) Homeworks per term will include a variety of tasks such as data response, multiple choice and some essay writing. 3) You will be taking a significant amount of notes and be expected to contribute to classroom discussion based on the above work. 4) 3 exams are all taken in June of the AS year – All 1 hour long with a mixture of data response, multiple choice and some essay writing.
