NO SMOKING POLICY
Drawn up by: ALC/DHB
Date: June 2007
Date adopted by Governing Body: 18 June 2007
Revised:
NO SMOKING POLICY AT HINCHINGBROOKE SCHOOL
- Introduction
- We are committed to achieving the five outcomes for children as stated in Every Child Matters. When considering the use of tobacco on our premises the ‘Be Healthy’ outcome is paramount. In our community drug policy we state a commitment to developing an effective ‘No Smoking’ policy.
- Our No Smoking policy directly relates to the school drug and Health and Safety policies.
- Aims of the Policy
- The policy seeks to:
- To comply with Health & Safety Legislation and Employment Law
- To protect the students, staff and members of the community from exposure to second hand smoke
- Raise awareness of the dangers associated with exposure to tobacco smoke and promote the benefit of a smoke free lifestyle to our students
- Take account of the needs of those who smoke and to support those who wish to stop
- Restrictions on Smoking
- Smoking is not permitted in any part of the premises, entrances or grounds at any time, by any person regardless of their status or business with the school.
- Because of our commitment to the well-being of children and the wider health of the community, this No Smoking Policy extends to the use of our building outside school hours. This will be agreed beforehand with those who hire our premises {see page 2}.
- Visitors
- All visitors, contractors and deliverers are required to abide by the no smoking policy. Staff members are expected to remind parents and visitors of the no smoking policy. However they are not expected to enter into any confrontation which may put their personal safety at risk.
Smoking is not permitted in vehicles being used on school business, including taxis and school buses. This is outlined further in ‘Supporting the Cambridgeshire Community Drug Policy’, Appendix B9 ‘Considering Drug Issues and Home School Transport’.
- Support for smokers
- We will supply information and contact details of local NHS Stop Smoking Services for our local area or the National Don’t Give Up Giving Up free-phone helpline 0800 1690169; Huntingdonshire – 01480 415279
We will offer support to young people wishing to stop smoking through one to one support about the effects of smoking and refer to school nurse for support. We will also consult with professional agencies when the student is willing to stop and take advice.
- Disciplinary Action
- Staff who disregard the policy will be disciplined according to usual disciplinary procedures.
- We will follow our Behaviour Policy when responding to students who disregard the no smoking policy.
- Monitoring and reviewing
- This policy will be monitored annually and reviewed every two years to ensure it continues to meet the aims.
- The No Smoking Policy Co-ordinator is the Health Promoting Schools Co-ordinator.
Hinchingbrooke House
Amendment to Smoking Policy 9th June 2007
Agreed by: Business Board (KN, BG, PF, IDR)
On 6th June 2007 it was agreed by the Business Board that due to the detrimental effect on commercial lettings, the following amendments to the school no smoking policy would be allowed:
- For all-day functions held at Hinchingbrooke House, outside of regular school hours, a smoking area would be established (on request only) on the terrace, for customer use.
- This area would be properly signed and equipped with ashtrays, to avoid the patio and planted areas being used to discard cigarette butts.
- This area would be totally cleared of signage and any evidence that could be seen to encourage smoking, before the start of the school day.
- The lettings staff will make every effort to dissuade guests from smoking on site and will only offer the option of a smoking area if it is requested by the client in advance.
- All other functions will be made aware that the school site is a non-smoking area.
- These amendments apply to functions in Hinchingbrooke House only and not to the PAC or Sports Pavilion, which will remain totally non-smoking.
- The Business Board will review this policy during the autumn term.
