Dear Parent/Carer,

OfSTED Inspection 2008

I am pleased to provide you with a copy of the OfSTED inspection report.  The main school has been graded ‘Satisfactory and Improving’.  The Sixth Form has been graded ‘Good’ with outstanding features.  Parents who had children at Hinchingbrooke at the time of the previous inspection in 2005, and those who have studied the 2005 report subsequently, may find these grade judgements a little puzzling.  Inspectors have endorsed our view that the school has improved over this period.  However, in 2005 the main school was graded Good (3) and the Sixth Form was graded Very Good (2).  The explanation lies in the change from a seven point scale in 2005 to a four point scale in 2008 and the raising of the required standards in the meantime.

We are delighted to see some Outstanding (1) scores, especially for our Sixth Form and for overall attendance. It was also encouraging to see ‘outstanding’ used to describe our Key Stage 3 (11-14) mathematics and science performance. The majority of grades are Good (2) but the key achievement measure at Key Stage 4 (14-16) is Satisfactory (3).  It is important to note that this means our students are achieving as well as students in most other similar schools.  The inspectors have substantially agreed with our own evaluation of what the school is doing well and what we need to improve.  Indeed, we were commended for both the clear, concise and accurate nature of our self-evaluation report and the clarity of our School Development Plan.  Students and staff were a great credit to the school, showing Hinchingbrooke at its best.

We believe, and the inspectors endorsed this, that Key Stage 4 performance will be better in 2008 and 2009.  However, there is always some risk in predicting the future, so we will need to wait until August to discover what actual progress we have made.

I have separately attached an invitation to comment on our next improvement steps as we prepare new Specialism and School Development Plans.  Your views are important to us.  Please respond if you can.

Yours sincerely,

Mr K E Nancekievill

Headteacher
