Aim
To provide students with an introduction to the link between Activity and better health. To introduce and demonstrate the opportunities within everyday life to become more active.
General Course Objectives
This NVQ level 1 will give the candidate:
An introduction to the underpinning principles of how the body works.
Will provide an understanding of the links between activity and better health.
To enable candidates to prepare a personal activity log (PAL) for themselves to include active daily living and more structured sessions eg. Classes, gym sessions etc
The ability to demonstrate a basic knowledge of health living.
Encouragement to gain confidence in the subject area and commence or progress their exercise and/or activity levels.
An introduction to career pathways in the health and fitness industry.
Unit 1: The Body and How it Works
At the end of this unit candidates will be able to:
Use simply terminology and have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology relating to skeletal system, muscles and their actions, cardio respiratory system, energy systems and the effect of exercise.
An understanding of what constitutes healthy living, including basic nutrition and the factors affecting health and fitness relating to smoking, alcohol and stress.
Unit 2: How To Adopt An Active, Healthy Lifestyle
At the end of this unit candidates will be able to:
Prepare a personal activity log based on themselves.
Reflect on the success of these sessions and create an action plan based upon activities available in the local community.
Consider their own general lifestyle, including healthy eating ad make appropriate adjustments.
Assessment
Unit 1:
A 60 minute external theory paper consisting of 0 multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Unit 2:
Internally assessed and verified, and externally verified: personal activity logs, to include the following tasks:
Complete a personal health and lifestyle profile.
Prepare a series of appropriate physical activity/exercise sessions for yourself, including a warm-up and cool-down.
Consider basic health and safety issues when organising the session.
Reflect on the effectiveness of the sessions.
Complete an action plan for future activity/exercise.
Consider daily food intake and make appropriate adjustments.
Research the local community for lifestyle activities that may be of interest eg. Local community centre, health club, sports centre etc.
