Instructing Exercise and Fitness - Level 2
Aim
To train candidates to a professionally competent level. Enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.
General Course Objectives
To develop candidates’ knowledge of anatomy and physiology and how it relates to exercise and fitness.
To develop candidates’ ability to plan and deliver safe effective gym sessions.
To provide candidates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to offer advice on active and healthy eating.
To provide candidates with the knowledge to develop good customer service and the personal qualities required by the exercise and fitness industry.
To provide candidates with the knowledge and skills to offer emergency first aid, and an awareness of health and safety in an exercise and fitness environment.
Unit 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
Demonstrate, through a multi-choice paper, knowledge of anatomy and physiology in the following areas: skeletal system, neuromuscular system, muscles and muscle actions, respiratory system, circulation system, energy systems and the effect of exercise.
Unit 2: Planning a Gym Session and Promoting Physical Activity
Demonstrate knowledge of session structure by writing a session plan.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and variables of training and programme design through multi-choice questioning and the writing of a session plan.
Demonstrate, by conducting a consultation, the ability to gather information about a client prior to planning a session.
Write a detailed session, including warm-up, CV, resistance, free weights , core conditioning and cool down.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic nutrition through multi-choice question and completing a case study.
Demonstrate knowledge of how to promote active healthy living and eating, through case study questions.
Unit 3: Instructing a Gym Session and Providing Customer Service
Demonstrate the ability to teach a 1-1 gym session, to include an appropriate warm up, CV, resistance, free weight, core conditioning and cool down.
Write an evaluation of own teaching of the session and write an action plan for improvements.
Demonstrate knowledge of equal opportunities, the exercise and fitness codes of ethics and customer service through completion of a worksheet and in teaching a gym session.
Unit 4: Health and Safety in Gym Instructing
Perform CPR on a mannequin
Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety and first aid through the completion of a worksheet.
Complete an accident/incident report form.
Assessment:
Unit 1: A 90 minute external theory paper consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions.
Unit 2:Internally assessed and verified, and externally verified:
30 minute 15 question multi choice theory paper
A detailed session plan, including warm-up, CV, resistance, free weights , core conditioning and cool down.
Case study of promoting health living.
Unit 3: Internally assessed and verified, and externally verified:
Performance of teaching an hour gym session , followed by oral questioning
Evaluation of own teaching
Worksheet on providing customer service.
Unit 4: Internally assessed and verified, and externally verified:
Performance of CPR
Worksheet on health and safety, including first aid
A mock incident/accident report form.
