What are the GCSE Topics?

For French, German and Spanish there are 5 GCSE topics:

  • At Home and Abroad
Comparing life in the UK with life abroad, Holidays and Home Town descriptions.
  • House, Home and Daily Routine
Talking about yourself, your family and life at home, describing your house and your room.
  • Education, Training and Employment
School, Work Experience, University and future career plans.
  • Media, Entertaining and Youth Culture
Talking about Films, TV, books, newspapers, magazines, music and activities young people like to do.
  • Social Activities, Fitness and Health
Special events and celebrations, social activities, giving advice on exercise, healthy eating, smoking, drugs.

In the Speaking exam, you will choose one of these 5 as your first topic of conversation; the Exam Board will randomly select your second topic.

In writing, you cannot submit more than one piece of coursework (220 words approx.) from each topic. You may only redraft a piece of coursework once.

To meet the assessment criteria at the highest level, your coursework must contain examples of:

  • A range of tenses - what you do, did and are going to do
  • Your opinion- 'justified' opinions, explaining why you think as you do, are required for the highest marks
  • A good range of vocabulary and idiom from within the chosen topic
  • An appropriate use of 'negatives' - saying what you do/did NOT think or do
  • Complex sentences using clauses and connectives to avoid repetition and lists
